Medical Scholarship Program

The Scholarship Program began in the summer of 2001. During our first visit to Patzun we held our first clinic and we had the assistance of a new medical school graduate from Guatemala Luis Enrique Perez.  Dr. Luis was very special because he had himself been raised in a special project in Antigua named The God’s Child Project.   He was able to receive support to complete his high school education and go on to medical school at La Universidad de San Carlos in Guatemala City. 

During our first clinic we could see that he really wanted to be a pediatrician but was unable to accept a residency program because of a lack of money.  HEDS UP Los Niños, though our scholarship program, provided the financial resources to complete his Pediatric Residency and now he has an active pediatric practice and he has continued his association with HEDS Up for Los Niños.

Our current medical student is José Alejandro Ajú Coy.  José was raised in a large family that lives in a very small village near Patzun.  They are very poor and would never be able to pay for his education.  HEDS UP Los Niños had provided a scholarship for José so he can realize his life-long dream of being a doctor.

These are both excellent examples of successfully breaking the Cycle of Poverty though education. They are dedicated to helping the poor and disenfranchised and working with HEDS UP for Los Niños
